You want to put on a show in Players? There's ten steps to glory...

1.- PICK A PLAY

Sounds simple... and it is. Or why not write your own. Players is a student society so as such we give priority to student written shows... and we don't have to pay any rights either. Oh... a submission will not be accepted without a director - so if you're not directing the show, make sure somebody is!

2 - DECIDE A TIME

We have slots at lunchime [1pm] or evenings [6/8pm]. We usualy have two shows on each week so the place does get pretty hectic. Lunchtime shows must be under an hour long, so that audience members with 2pm lectures dont't develop apoplexy worrying whether they'll make it on time. First time directors in Players are restricted to a 1pm slot. Sounds harsh we know... but that's the rule.

3 - DECIDE WHAT WEEK

Pick three weeks actually. If you don't get your first choice we'll try and give the second and so on - oddly some weeks are much more popular that others. Your masterpiece can only run for one week by the way... sorry. Weeks are Monday to Saturday - with the Monday show being a preview. And as if this wasn't enough some weeks are reserved by committee for various events, such as Freshers Co-Op, New Writers etc.

4 - DECIDE [YES ANOTHER DECISION] THE AREA OF THE THEATRE YOU WANT TO USE

Being a black box theatre you can put the stage and audience pretty much wherever [ish] you want. Even on the floor. Not usually very popular.

5 - FIND A PRODUCER

Half way there, but this is a big step. A producer is the person who will get sponsorship for the show, organise stuff, and help you, the director, to remain calm throughout. Honest. You will also need a lighting designer - just so that our poor Tech Manager isn't left to do everything at the last minute.

6 - SUBMISSION

Now we need to see all this. Put all the above information together as a submission. Submissions should include:
Name of Play
Author
Rights Information [inside book cover, where applicable]
Director
Producer
Lighting Designer
Time
Week
Area of Theatre

7 - ALSO INCLUDE

Submissions should also include a 50 word synopsis of the play - this is for the Publicity Officer. Use your 50 words to explain the play's story [don't give away the ending] and to entice potential audience members. You will also need to submit ten copies of your production notes - these are for the Committee.Your production notes should explain what you want to do with the play. They could include ideas you have about costume, lighting, music or casting. NB Pre-casting is not allowed under any circumstances. Shows have been pulled in the past due to pre-casting. If you are putting on a show in Players you have to hold auditions. Period. Besides... you might be surprised at the talented folk who turn up to such events. Three copies of the script. Please. please include these. Even if your directing Shakespeare we'd like to know how long it's going to be - so submit a cut script. Your submission pack is now finished!

8 - DEADLINE

The submission deadline for Michaelmas Term is usually Week 2 or 3. Hilary and Trinity Terms are decided at the end of the precding term. Check the Players Board [and Virtua-Board] for more information. Once all submissions are received the committee holds a submissions metting. Aspiring directors must face the committee and discuss their submission. And also do a gruelling physical test. Only joking. Afterward the committee constructs a schedule of plays for the term - we always try to fit everyone in!

9 - AFTER CONFIRMATION

Once you receive confirmation all the family go for a meal and you get loads of money. Er... sorry. After receiving confirmation of your slot in Players you're free to hold auditions and start rehearsing. Directors can book up to three hours a day in Players. Preference is given [obviously] to people whose show is on next week. No rehearsals are allowed anywhere in the building while a show is on and the theatre is unavailable for the hour before a performance.

10 - YOUR LIAISON

Every director has a liaison on the committee. These will make themselved known to you initally but after that its up to the director to approach their committee member for any advise/help wanted. We won't bite... again. Once your show is finished you're entitled to claim your budget back from the Treasurer. Lunchtime shows get ?140 and evening shows get ?180. You produce the receipts for the amount you've spent [within the budget of course] and we'll pay you back. Oh, and you also get half the takings from the Saturday performance...
